Repurposing Old T-Shirts

I don’t know about you, but the t-shirt drawers of just about everyone I know are filled to the brim. My oldest one is 28 years old now. I bought it in Quebec City when I was 17, and it has The Beatles in their Yellow Submarine phase with cartoon like representations of John, Paul, George and Ringo, and of course a Blue Meanie. It’s become a keepsake. Even when I cant wear it anymore I will still keep it.

I think everyone must have t-shirts like that, filling up their drawers and making it impossible to fully clear space when it comes time to bag the less memorable things up for the thrift store. I think we should all be either donating old t-shirts OR repurposing our old t-shirts into things we can use or memorialize into something we can keep forever. With some scissors, a sewing machine and a little creativity we can transform our nearly unwearable treasures into fun new things.

Examples of what you can do with t-shirts

Here’s a great idea for all of those sport t-shirts: make a t-shirt quilt! Obviously, this can be done along the lines of any particular theme, like concerts, famous cities, or Grand Prix racing. My dad would like that one. If you need some more to fill in the blanks, pick some up a the thrift shop.

Another fun possibility is to make bags. (also simplehomemade)

For t-shirts that aren’t quite so special and you’d be tempted to get rid of, you can make a t-shirt rug: http://dishfunctionaldesigns.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-to-upcycle-thrift-shop-finds-into.html

My favorite ideas are to make this scarf: http://shwinandshwin.blogspot.com/2010/09/recycled-tee-scarf.html

And these super cute rosette bracelets: http://www.u-createcrafts.com/2011/05/creative-guest-jujub-jersey-bracelets.html

The possibilities for t-shirt re-purposing are seemingly endless, so there’s no excuse to have that drawer be so full anymore!
