The Importance of Donating and Recycling Electronics

We all have electronic products that no longer work or that we’ve stashed in a drawer or closet because we’ve replaced them. If you’re like me, then you’ve probably just let them sit around taking up space and collecting dust because you just weren’t quite sure what to do with them. If this is the case, then it’s time to learn why donating and recycling electronics is so important.

It takes vast amounts of energy to mine and manufacture the resources and materials that are used in electronic products, so donating and recycling them not only conserves natural resources, but also cuts down on the greenhouse gas emissions as well as the air and water pollution caused by manufacturing materials.

According to the EPA, recycling one million laptops saves the annual energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3500 US homes. Perhaps even more staggering is the amount of natural materials that are recovered by recycled cell phones. For every million cell phones we recycle, we can retrieve and reuse 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium.

So get those old electronics out of the closet and donate them today!
